After spending the day at the British Society for the Study of Vulval Disease (BSSVD) we are reflecting on the ever increasing burden of vulval disorders.

Lichen sclerosus (LS), probably one of the most common disorders, is a life long inflammatory condition which causes severe itching and scarring of the vulva. Most people do not know that it can start from childhood and have a terrible impact on development and future sexual satisfaction.

It is estimated that vulval LS affects between 3-5% of our population.

We talked a lot today about a lack of ‘shared language’ between clinicians and patients leading to dismissed symptoms and delayed diagnoses. We discussed empathetic listening and how we can better engage with our patients to continue providing top quality care.

Disorders of the vulva are exceedingly common and you should never hesitate to seek help if you suspect a problem. Nicole Zenner is our in house specialist in disorders of vulva.
